Watch the video version: What Is House Music Anyways?

Hello there, House Music Lovers! Today’s blog is dedicated to you.

I’ll be elaborating on the various styles of house music in this article, so make sure to read all the way to the bottom and have fun.

What Is House Music, and Why Is It So Popular?

One of the most popular genres of electronic dance music is house. It began in Chicago’s nightclubs in the early 1980s. Different styles of house music, covering various sub-genres, have emerged over time.

It grew when people began to prefer nightclubs over rock concerts and other forms of entertainment.

House music is commonly used by DJs to help listeners feel more energized and dance along with the music.

Everyone gathered in nightclubs on a regular basis, so the origins of house music may be traced back to disco, which was hugely popular in the 1970s.

Some people believe that house music is dead or that it is no longer as popular as it once was, but they are mistaken. House music isn’t dead; it’s alive and well. House music is still very popular in nightclubs, despite the fact that it does not sound as good as it used to.

House music has kept a constant presence at raves and on dance playlists. Additionally, the genre can also be found in modern hip-hop and mainstream music. Different DJs try to experiment with it bringing in great mixes of both worlds to the public.

So yeah, nowadays it is called an umbrella for some other genres.

DJs like Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy were among the first to create house music.

House music is characterized by a pace of 120-130 beats per minute, a 4/4 time signature, and a kick on each beat.

Let’s look at the sub-genres of house music now that we’ve gotten a good understanding of the genre as a whole.

The Types Of House Music

Deep House

I had to start with this one since I think might be the genre that most of us are familiar with.

Deep house is essentially the same as original House music, but with a slower tempo.

It’s usually between 110 and 125 bpm, with strong jazz, soul, and funk flavor. However, there are a lot of choppy voices in this song, which makes it danceable.

Known Deep House Artists:

  • Kaskade
  • Miguel Migs
  • Andy Caldwell
  • Jimpster

Chicago House

While Chicago is a lesser-known sub-genre, it was one of the first.

The first house music style to emerge from Chicago in the 1980s. Simple basslines, four-to-the-floor percussion, hi hats, and synths are all used in this track.

Disco, post-disco, soul, funk, and hip hop have all influenced this genre.

Known Chicago House Artists:

  • Frankie Knuckles
  • Mr. Fingers
  • Marshall Jefferson
  • Fingers Inc.
  • Adonis
  • DJ Sneak.

Electro House

Another well-known house genre is electro house, which has a somewhat faster tempo.

It has a powerful bass line with a pace of roughly 130 beats per minute.

Although many people are unfamiliar with electro house, most of us have heard it at least once because of well-known artists contributing to it.

  • Dj Tiësto
  • Dj Snake
  • Skrillex
  • Afrojack
  • David Guetta
  • Calvin Harris

French House

This sort of house music is a subgenre of EDM that incorporates elements of disco, funk, and house.

Funky basslines, filtered and phased vocals, and 1970s and 1980s funk and disco samples characterize French house.

French house music became known as “filter house” as a result of the effects.

Known French House Artists:

  • Lifelike
  • Madeon
  • Fred Falke
  • Cassius
  • David Guetta
  • Feadz

Progressive House

This genre combines progressive rock and jazz fusion with traditional house music to create the effect.

Synthesizers, sequencers, samplers, drum machines, electric guitars, keyboards, and other instruments are commonly used in progressive house live performances.

This genre has highs and lows, although they aren’t as extreme as Deep House.

Known Progressive House Artists:

  • deadmau5
  • Moonbeam
  • Pryda
  • Avicii
  • Deep Dish

Tropical House

Trop house (short for the tropical house) is a relatively recent house music subgenre. It should have been generated around ’00s

It has a summery air to it, with saxophones, steel drums, electro synths, and marimbas among the instruments.

In comparison to other genres such as a deep house, the feeling is often lighter and more relaxed.

Known Tropical House Artists:

  • Thomas Jack
  • Kygo
  • Matoma
  • Lost Frequencies

Acid House

Often uses samples or spoken lines instead of lyrics to create a repetitive, hypnotic, and trance-like vibe.

It features electronic “squelch” sounds popularized in the mid-1980s, mostly by Chicago DJs experimenting with the Roland TB-303 electronic synthesizer-sequencer.

Known Acid House Artists:

  • Primal Scream
  • 808 State
  • Lords of Acid
  • The KLF

Latin House

Latin music such as Samba, Bossa Nova, Tango, Mambo, and Reggeaton, as the name implies, has a wide range of rhythm patterns and employs a variety of percussion elements in unusual time signatures.

Latin House combines these components with House music, resulting in a unique new style.

It is very popular on the United States East Coast, particularly in Miami and the New York City metropolitan area.

Known Latin House Artists:

  • DJ Sneak.
  • Oscar G.
  • Rebolledo.

This subgenre was influenced by disco music and frequently employs female vocalists.

Known Funky House Artists:

  • Botty Luv
  • Axwell
  • StoneBridge
  • Madeon
  • Martin Solveig

Future House

The future house would be one of the newest genres since it originated around 2010.

However it was popularized in late 2014 and early 2015, it combines deep/metallic/sax hooks with hefty drops and is generally described as a mix of UK garage and deep house with additional components and methods from EDM.

Known Future House Artists:

  • Oliver Heldens
  • Don Diablo
  • Tchami
  • Habstrakt
  • Autograf
  • Pep & Rash

Final Words

While there are many additional subgenres, I did my best to include the ten most popular ones. DJs are constantly experimenting with new genres and sounds.

I hope I was able to provide you with some general information on house music, and I wish you a pleasant listening experience.
