In this article, I will try to explain to you guys in the simplest form of explanation “Why do DJs wear headphones“!

Without further ado, let us go straight to the point and find out the answer!

Why Do DJs Wear Headphones?

Headphones are one of the most important types of audio equipment, that is used by many DJs, and we are more than used to seeing DJs wearing them. When a DJ doesn’t have headphones on their ears it looks a bit weird because we are used to them. Anyways, there are some reasons that DJs wear headphones, so it isn’t a thing that happens unconsciously.

Some of the most important reasons that I would like to include are as follow:

Cueing

Cueing is one of the first things and the main reason that DJs wear headphones. By the way, cueing is everywhere, and it is in every article that is related to DJs in general.

By wearing headphones a DJ can listen to cue the song that will be played after the one that is already. While cueing, a DJ can listen to how the song that is chosen as the next one will sound, meanwhile, the people that are there have no idea what it will be like.

At this point, for cueing, headphones are like a personal space for a DJ.

Mixing, Beatmatching

The process of mixing a cued track or song in the world of DJs is called Beatmatching, and headphones are the best way to do so.

Since DJs have to adjust every single thing, tone, melody, and note in tracks, the best way to do so is to use headphones throughout the process. Now, when using headphones for this reason (mixing, beatmatching), the DJ is able to listen to everything that they need to without the audience listening to it.

Again, an amazing personal space and a clue of what they are doing.

Blocking Out Distractions

Another reason, a more practical one, why DJs use headphones is because whenever they are working, they are distracted by many things, and it is because DJs, mostly work in very crowded environments.

Crowded environments tend to be a bit distracting, and headphones are the biggest helpers on these occasions. What I would like to mention here, is that noise-canceling headphones are great ones when it comes to blocking distractions.

Everybody wants to be attentive while working, right? Headphones will help you to do so!

Prevent Hearing Loss

Considering the fact that most DJs work in very noisy environments, it is more than normal that their hearing ability is a little bit weaker than other people. Well, that’s where headphones come in handy! For DJs, headphones are known to be used in order to prevent hearing loss, especially if they use closed-back headphones or headphones that have amazing noise-canceling technology.

As a professional, I wouldn’t like to become deaf just because I don’t like wearing headphones! I advise you to do so as well.

If you are new to DJing, the best thing to do is to wear headphones and they are the biggest plus.

Many professional DJs, being in this type of field for many years know how to not be distracted by environments, and as a new one, you will definitely be distracted because there are a lot of people and there are a lot of things happening at the same time. Headphones, just as mentioned above, will help you avoid distractions in many ways so that you can be fully concentrated on your job.

Profesional people use professional headphones such as the names Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, and many other professional brands that deal only with headphones that are related to creating or mixing sound.
